Paid Leave Passes in the State Senate
Call the Governor's Office and Urge Him to Veto Bill
On April 7, legislation mandating paid leave in New Jersey passed in the State Senate. The vote was 21-15. The bill now heads to Governor Corzine's desk for his signature. He has said in the past that he supports paid leave and will sign the legislation into law.
"The Governor has stated time and time again that the main goal of his Administration is to grow jobs and the economy," said chamber lobbyist Jim Leonard. "Hopefully, he will keep this in mind and decide to veto the bill. That way, people will have more money in their pockets to purchase groceries, gas and other necessities."
The chamber released a study on Friday stating that the Office of Legislative Services' fiscal estimate of how much the paid leave program will cost workers is way too low. Click here for the study, which was paid for by the chamber's Enterprise Trust Fund.
New Jersey becomes the third state in the nation to mandate paid leave on employers if the bill is signed into law.
Chamber members are now encouraged to call the Governor's Office at (609) 292-6000 to tell his staff that you oppose paid leave in New Jersey. Thank you for sending hundreds of e-mails to key legislators over the weekend.
