New Jersey taxpayers bear the heaviest state-local tax burden in 2008, and Alaskans have the lightest tax burden, according to a new report from the Tax Foundation. In Tax Foundation Special Report, No. 163, "State-Local Tax Burdens Dip As Income Growth Outpaces Tax Growth," senior economist Gerald Prante computes each state's combined state-local tax burden, accounting for taxes paid out of state. Rutgers Regional Report, April 2008 - Private-sector employment growth in the Middle Atlantic states (New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania) during 2007 surprisingly outpaced the nation’s growth, driven largely by the impact of record Wall Street profits on New York’s economy. However, a contraction is now well underway due to “very aggressive” downsizing in the financial services industry, the credit crunch and the collapse of the housing market. Council On State Taxation Business Tax Burden Study, 2008
The Council On State Taxation (COST) is pleased to announce the release of the annual Business Tax Burden Study for Fiscal Year 2007, prepared in conjunction with Ernst & Young LLP.  The study shows all state and local business taxes paid in each of the 50 states and by industry.  Results indicate that businesses paid $577 billion in state and local taxes in fiscal year 2007, representing 44.1% of total state and local taxes.  The taxes include business property taxes, sales taxes on business inputs, gross receipts taxes, corporate income taxes, and other state and local taxes that are the statutory liability of business taxpayers.
