The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce applauds Gov. Mikie Sherrill, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, and the FIFA World Cup 26 New York New Jersey Host Committee for pivoting in a thoughtful and strategic new direction regarding fan experiences surrounding the upcoming World Cup.

By shifting from a single fan fest in Jersey City to community-based fan zones, watch parties, street fairs and festivals across the state, this plan creates the opportunity that economic benefits of the tournament will be shared more broadly. With matches taking place in Northern New Jersey and in Philadelphia, which generates economic activity for South Jersey, it is critical that small businesses and local municipalities statewide have the opportunity to participate in this once-in-a-generation event.

This renewed focus on activating municipalities and creating meaningful opportunities for small businesses reflects what many in the business community — including local, regional, and diverse chambers of commerce — have been advocating for over many months. Expanding the footprint of fan engagement will drive foot traffic to Main Streets, restaurants, retailers, and hospitality businesses in communities throughout New Jersey.

As we move closer to kickoff in June, it will be important that the NJEDA’s application process and criteria for participation are simple, transparent, and streamlined. With only months remaining, municipalities need clarity and efficiency to fully leverage this opportunity.

The World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we look forward to working alongside state and local partners to help promote participation, support small businesses, and ensure communities throughout New Jersey share in the economic benefits.

—Tom Bracken, President, New Jersey Chamber of Commerce
