The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce is closely monitoring today’s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States to strike down a significant portion of President Donald Trump’s global tariff program.
At this early stage, it is too soon to determine the full economic impact of this ruling, particularly for New Jersey’s diverse and globally connected business community. The tariffs had been generating revenue for the federal government, while also increasing costs in certain sectors — costs that, in some cases, were passed along to businesses and consumers.
The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce applauds Gov. Mikie Sherrill, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, and the FIFA World Cup 26 New York New Jersey Host Committee for pivoting in a thoughtful and strategic new direction regarding fan experiences surrounding the upcoming World Cup.
Less than a month into Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s administration, there is already a palpable sense of optimism across New Jersey’s business community. Early outreach from the governor, Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell, and key members of the administration has been positive, robust, and refreshingly open – signaling what many of us have hoped for: a true partnership between state leadership and the employer community.
Gov. Sherrill inherited an extraordinarily complex set of challenges – from fiscal pressures and infrastructure needs to workforce shortages and competitiveness concerns. At the same time, she has had to assemble an entirely new leadership team. That is no small undertaking. The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce truly appreciates the magnitude of these responsibilities, and we are encouraged by the talented staff being put in place to help guide our state forward.
The Trump Administration must immediately restore funding for the Gateway Tunnel project. Gateway is essential to our region’s economy and to the millions of commuters who depend on reliable rail service every day. This project is already supporting nearly 1,000 construction jobs and will ultimately create tens of thousands more while generating billions in economic activity. Halting work now puts hardworking families out of work, wastes over $1 billion already invested, and risks higher costs and long delays. Gateway is on time, under budget, and delivering real results. New Jersey’s business community will not accept this setback. Withholding these funds is unlawful, and the Administration must act now to restore funding and keep this critical project moving.

Exclusive briefing for Cornerstone NJ members
How’s the national economy? It’s complicated. So said Curtis Dubay, chief economist at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, who delivered an exclusive briefing to New Jersey Chamber of Commerce's Cornerstone members Jan. 29.
The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce strongly supports Executive Order No. 7 signed on Jan. 23 by Gov. Mikie Sherrill. By temporarily pausing the adoption of pending administrative rules and regulations for 90 days, this Executive Order gives the new Administration the opportunity to ensure that regulatory actions reflect the state’s priorities, especially tackling high costs, strengthening our workforce, and fostering an environment where businesses can grow and create jobs.

The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce congratulates Governor Mikie Sherrill and Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell on their inauguration and assumption of office. We wish them every success as they begin their service to the people of New Jersey.
